Description Ardbeg has gone space aged! Restricted to two bottles per person. Bottled at a strength of 49% it is non chill-filtered for extra texture and mouthfeel. Tasting Notes Aroma: A burst of intense smoky fruit escapes into the atmosphere. Add water and breathe in toasted vanilla, sizzling cinnamon and warm hazelnut. Taste: An explosion of crackling peat ignites flavour explosions. Tangy lemon and lime juice, spiced toffee, followed by smooth buttermilk, bananas and currants. Smoke brims with creamy cappuccino and toasted marshmallows. Finish: Long and smoky with tarry espresso. - The Ardbeg Galileo is absolutely stunning! It not only looks the part but it tastes outstanding to. Distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2012 The ‘heart’ is Ardbeg matured in ex-marsala casks from Sicily Balanced with first fill ex- bourbon casks bottled at 49% ABV Non Chill-Filtered. Tasting Note: Colour: Deep Amber Nose: At full strength, soot/tar, spicy toffee, Butterkist popcorn with hints of ripe, exotic tropical fruits (banana, mango and lychee). A splash of water releases fresh, salving antiseptic notes and a hint of sea spray Taste: The chewy/oily texture leads in to sweet, creamy fudge, smoked apricots smothered in cream, ripe banana and lots of spices - cinnamon, clove and aniseed Finish: The chewy/oily texture leads in to sweet, creamy fudge, smoked apricots smothered in cream, ripe banana and lots of spices - cinnamon, clove and aniseed The smoky, but sweet, finish lingers long in the mouth, again drawing the mind back to rich, smoked fruits. Since Ardbeg went space aged, cyberspace has been buzzing with rumours of a new bottling from Ardbeg to celebrate our first intergalactic whisky experiment. So here's the news to send you into orbit – Ardbeg Galileo, our sensational new bottling, is finally here! Encased within each bottle of Galileo is hallmark 1999 Ardbeg which has been matured in classic ex-bourbon barrels and some ex-Marsala casks (sadly none of which have been in space). The result is a deep golden, smoky Ardbeg balanced with rich flavours from Sicily. Bottled at a strength of 49% it is non chill-filtered for extra texture and mouthfeel. For those who wish to toast Ardbeg’s first whisky experiment in space with a dram or two of Galileo, we advise you to buy your bottle early. Galileo is available from your usual specialist whisky retailers. In the meantime, please visit www.ardbeg.com/galileo to see a movie dedicated to this momentous event. You can even create your own Ardbeggian astro-nut e-card to send to your friends across planet earth… And once your bottle of Galileo lands in your drinks cabinet, don’t forget to raise a glass to the International Space Station and its precious cargo, as it travels through the stars… Nose: Soft, sweet peat, sweet spirity notes, tarred ropes, coal dust, barbequed pineapple (à la St Heston of Bray), a touch of dirty sump oil, pine needles, freshly smashed-open coconut, dry breadcrumbs and crushed seashells. A few drops of water calm down the phenols and reveal syrup glazed pineapple upsidedown-cake (one of my specialities) and stewed gooseberries. Palate: The first thing I noticed was that it wasn’t as sweet as the nose might have suggested, at least not in an upfront syrupy way. Instead it had unsweetened tropical fruit and sharp edged Fruit Salad chews, filled out with rich fruitcake sweetness, although this is Ardbeg so it was more a ‘smoked fruitcake’ hit, along with cold coal stoves, dark wood, a hint of leaf mulch and some sea spray. Water yet again calmed down the peat, revealing a bit more sweetness from the fruit. Finish: On the swallow there was a burst of tarry phenols, which faded to leave lingering damp wood and leaves. Comment: At first I though it’d be way too sweet for my currently savoury palate, but instead it was rich and fruity, eschewing syrup for sweet smoke and earthiness. A successful experiment. The small, remote Scottish island of Islay (pronounced 'eye-lah') is an antique land. A wild and untamed place, where Celtic monks found refuge from raiding Norsemen and early distillers smuggled their illicit ‘aquavitae’ at Ardbeg’s rugged rocky cove. Abundant soft water, fertile soil and acres of precious peat makes this Island a place of pilgrimage for the single malt whisky faithful. Ardbeg prides itself on being the 'Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky'. Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts widely available. Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as 'the peaty paradox'.
