Remark :

Ledaig

: Ledaig is a heavily peated Malt, and is produced infrequently. As a result it is very rare and much sought after. The name Ledaig is derived from the Gaelic translation of Tobermory, indeed the distillery was known as the Ledaig Distillery in its formative years.

In 1797 a local merchant by the name of John Sinclair filed an application to build a distillery but was refused. However one year later permission was finally granted for Sinclair to proceed and Tobermory Distillery was founded.
DCL took over the distillery in 1916. Silent from 1930 to 1972 when revived as the Ledaig Distillery (Tobermory) Ltd. This company went into receivership in 1975 and the business was acquired in 1978 by the Kirkleavington Property Co. of Cleckheaton. Tobermory was in production between 1979 and 1981, before closing again until 1989. It was purchased in 1993 by Burn Stewart Distillers for £600,000 plus £200,000 for stock. The distillery has four stills.
The only distillery on Mull. Because the distillery was closed for several years, very little Tobermory single malt has been produced until recently, all distilled between 1972 and 1975 and 1979 and 1981. Tobermory is now becoming more readily available, however. The older bottlings of Tobermory that are available have been bottled as Ledaig.
Owner Burn Stewart has decided to use only unpeated barley in the production of Tobermory, although a few mashes will be produced each year using peated barley. These will be reserved for whiskies marketed under the name Ledaig.
A privately owned loch situated high in the hills behind the distillery provides water for the distillery.
